Plants, trees and shrubs for Coastal Planting

This is by no means a complete list, but merely a guide to the sort of plants that will survive the conditions found close to the sea. Some will thrive, while others will struggle to find a footing. The most important factor is shelter. Given adequate shelter, proper planting techniques and maintenance (watering especially)  during the 'settling in' time, most of the following should do quite well. Take a look around where you're at to see what plants tend to cope with your particular area, but don't be surprised to find that by supplying these basic needs, you can have quite a variety of planting.

A good book to read on this is  Coastal Gardening by Julian Slatcher, or check on the books page for more information.
